Layman's description

Pub closures have long caused commercial and community concern. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought this sector to crisis point: the potential for widespread closures is rapidly escalating and scarring may be permanent.

In this context, it is surprising that no resource tracks accurately the extent and location of UK pubs so that the concentration and risks of closures can be monitored. This IAA project seeks to establish the working partnerships and foundation data for a resource (to be called the UK Pubs Observatory) to:

i. Create a publicly accessible map of all UK pubs.
ii. Track new openings and closures at 6-month intervals.
iii. Track changes in risk, ownership and planning status.

This resource will allow researchers, policy-makers and stakeholders/researchers to:

i. Differentiate closure/opening patterns between establishments regulated by the Pubs Code
Regulations 2016 and those that are not.
ii. Create more accurate pub closure statistics.
iii. Conduct spatial analyses of the pub sector.
