Description

This pilot is funded by the Department of Education (departmental pump-priming) here at the University of York. It runs from December 2017-July 2018.

The pilot study focuses on the role interaction plays in the process of bilingual first language acquiring (BFLA) children (those who learn two languages from birth). The proposed project aims to merge some theories and methodologies from both the formal linguistic and sociolinguistic (and socio-cultural) traditions in order to present a holistic account of the role interaction/input play in the process of bilingual child acquisition.

I will be working with 4 families (2 bilingual and 2 monolingual) and the target children will be 3 years old (and they have been matched in all other aspects). I will collect data over the coming months. Once the pilot is complete, I will write a report and make necessary changes to a number of methodological choices/assumptions if needed before the start of the actual project.

Layman's description

This project intends to understand how parental (and others') direct communication with the child assists them in learning their two languages. The study is interested in those children who speak more than one language from birth. The findings will be important to parents, teachers, and educators.
