In the context of developments on the Island and particularly the opening of an airport, the Government of St Helena asked us to review the operation of its new social security scheme which was introduced in 2012. The project included the collection of policy documents and statistical material, writing papers on such issues as uprating and adequacy and a visit to the Island by Roy Sainsbury to interview councillors, government officials, claimants and members of the public.
Now, as a result of recommendations developed at York, St Helena residents will, for the first time, have benefits based on minimum income standards, plus a new system of child benefit payments.
