Abstract

A numerical model in terms of rate equations for lateral mode amplitudes for analyzing static and dynamic properties of moderately broad area (tens of microns) laser diodes is proposed and used for modeling lasers with partially longitudinally intermixed areas. The limits to the improvement of near and far field and brightness by intermixing are analysed, and the roles of mode competition and shaping in the laser properties assessed.
