Abstract

Reichardt's dye impregnated HMS gives a selective, reversible and fast optical response to NH3 in air. When adsorbed on a poorly dehydrated HMS surface, Reichardt's betaine dye does not display its typical charge-transfer transition, which appears upon contact with ammonia.
