Abstract

A germylene complex with a labile η2-H<inf>2</inf> coligand, [RuH<inf>2</inf>(=GePh<inf>2</inf>)(η2-H<inf>2</inf>)(PCy<inf>3</inf>)<inf>2</inf>] (2), was isolated in very good yield from the reaction of the bis(dihydrogen) complex [RuH<inf>2</inf>(η2-H<inf>2</inf>)<inf>2</inf>(PCy<inf>3</inf>)<inf>2</inf>] (1) with Ph<inf>2</inf>GeH<inf>2</inf>. The hydrolytic synthesis of 1,1,3,3-tetraphenyldigermoxane, (HPh<inf>2</inf>Ge)<inf>2</inf>O, was catalyzed by 2, 1, and the tricyclopentylphosphine analogue 1<inf>Cyp</inf>. Coordination of digermoxane by ruthenium led to a complex best formulated as [RuH<inf>2</inf>({η2-H-GePh<inf>2</inf>}<inf>2</inf>O)(PCy<inf>3</inf>)<inf>2</inf>] on the basis of X-ray, NMR, IR, and DFT studies.
