Abstract
This paper outlines the extent of the UK’s dependence upon and integration into the US nuclear weapons enterprise in order to sustain its current Trident nuclear weapon system and the replacement programme initiated in 2007 starting with the procurement of new generation of ‘Successor’ ballistic missile submarines. It examines UK dependency in detail in the areas of missiles, warheads, targeting, and submarines. First, however, the nuclear relationship needs to be set in the context of the wider special relationship in UK national role conceptions.
