An introduction to special relativity for radiation and plasma physics

Research output: Book/ReportBook

Abstract

This book introduces special relativity with an emphasis on the ways relativity impacts the interaction of light with matter and the production of light by matter, particularly the interaction and production of light in plasma material. Rather than a treatment with a collection of formulas, the physics of relativity as related to the radiative processes of light is emphasized. The book reviews undergraduate level studies of special relativity, and then extends the discussion to the material required by postgraduates and researchers in astrophysics, high power laser interactions and the users of specialized light sources, such as synchrotrons and free electron lasers. The text adopts a highly pedagogical approach and includes numerous exercises within each chapter to reinforce the presentation of key concepts and applications of the material.
