Analysing the Research and Teaching Quality Achievement Frontier

Research output: Working paperDiscussion paper

Abstract

The paper introduces the concept of an achievement possibility frontier as a generalisation of the concept of a production possibility frontier in microeconomics, but taking into account the endogenous nature of key inputs under formula funding. The paper contains a theoretical analysis of the likely shape of this frontier in the context of higher education research and teaching quality assessments. It then links this theoretical analysis to an empirical analysis of the achievement possibility frontier for university Departments of Economics in the UK.
