Abstract
Elements of tempo and rhythm are perhaps the most innovative areas of research in this recording. There are three alla breve choruses which are commonly and, I believe, erroneously, performed at half speed. In terms of rhythm, the centrality of the Crucifixus in the structural layout of the Credo is emphasized by Bach by his use of several compositional devices – orchestration; a falling chromatic bass line; the aural and visual cross figures between the horizontal, contrapuntal vocal lines and the vertical, homophonic orchestra chords; his use of a sarabande dance. This last element is here highlighted by the three beats of the bar being performed unequally – ie with an extended 2nd beat and a shorter 3rd beat.
The CD has had significant international sales and radio broadcasts in UK, USA and across Europe; associated live performances have also taken place across UK.
