Abstract

Staged performance as part of York Early Music Festival of Bach St Matthew Passion. Peter Seymour directed his specially-prepared edition of Bach’s early 1727 version and used the forces Bach would have used for that first performance including solo voices for each of the two choirs. Liturgical context was achieved with audience chorales and chorale preludes flanked the Passion itself and with the closing motet by Jacob Händl Gallus.
