Abstract

Being Dufay (Recording) (as distinct from the live performance project of the same name) is a studio realisation of 7 individual compositions for voice and electronics. The component compositions (music items) are individually published by ECM Verlag, and are listed separately on this system. The album (this item) is published by ECM Records.

Being Dufay (Recorded Album, Studio Realisation) explores processes of adaptation and transcontextuality based on 6 minutes of source material from Guilaume Dufay (1397-1474). These fragments of early music are left entirely un-altered, and are set as sculptural points within the 48 minute original composition which surrounds them.

Extensive timbral extension of the singing voice is performed through digital formant modelling (using TAU synthesis) to create large-scale yet sonically unified choirs, together with a palete of sounds which display vocal-like qualities. This studio realisation of the work has been broadcast on the BBC (radio 3), Classic FM, ORF (Austria) and SWR (Germany).
John Potter sings the tenor part (but note this is not a collaborative composition).

The piece has received 13 repeat international performances at substantive venues.
