title = "Beyond hate: Policing sex work, protection and hate crime",
abstract = "This chapter reflects on the implications of situating sex workers experiences of crime within a conceptual and policy hate crime framework, arguing sex workers experiences of violent and other crime fit established conceptualisations of hate crime. It is based on research with police officers and sex workers in Merseyside, the first police force in the UK to treat crimes against sex workers as hate crime. Whilst acknowledging this model has limitations, it proposes it forms a progressive, protection based model of policing sex work which prioritises sex worker safety and contributes to practical improvements in policing crimes against sex workers.
