Abstract
The population and decay of excited states in Mg-24 has been investigated through the C-12(O-16,(CC)-C-12-C-12)alpha and C-12(O-16,(BeO)-Be-8-O-16)alpha reactions, at beam energies of 75, 85, and 115 MeV. The fragments from the breakup of the Mg-24 nucleus were detected in coincidence, permitting a study of both the excitation energies and the spins of the fissioning states. These measurements indicate a series of states in Mg-24 between 20 and 40 MeV with spins ranging from J=4 to 14 (h) over bar. The results are discussed in the context of the C-12+C-12 quasimolecular scattering resonances and other Mg-24 breakup reactions.
