Care in the Anthropocene: Getting beyond (hu)Man

Abstract

Critiquing the Capitalocene and its devastating planetary effects as a crisis of care, I offer a way of reimagining the sympoietic relations that more-than-human attachments compose, and suggest how the human and the more-than-human can become-with each other in fruitful and generative ways. This is not to collapse difference in some kind of mulch (apologies to compost lovers!) but to preserve a sense of being alongside each-otherness in partial and intermittent connection, and in ways that do not divide into hierarchical moral economies of division and exploitation, as at the same time as they preserve and respect difference.
