Abstract
Across Europe family members provide by far the largest amount of care for older, disabled and chronically ill people, family care is essential for the sustainability of many countries' long-term care arrangements. This study provides up-to-date evidence from across the European Union on the numbers and characteristics of carers and the consequences of caring.
