Ceci n'est pas une pianiste

Abstract

This performance/presentation formed a starting point for the research project ‘Performance, Subjectivity and Experimentation’ (York/Orpheus Research Centre in Music). The project examines how subjectivity is constituted through musical performance: who is the ‘I’ that performs, and how is that 'I' embodied in performance?

The performance/presentation included a new version of Annea Lockwood's Ceci n'est pas un piano (originally 2002, for piano, electronics and video), reworked by Lockwood with my own text. The piece is in part concerned with the performer’s relationship to her instrument and the development of artistic identity.
