Chapter 3: Solvents from Waste

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter focuses on solvents from food and industrial waste, their production from biomass, as well as current and potential applications. This includes lignocellulosic material, which is part of both industrial and food waste streams, derivatives of glycerol from used cooking oil, and terpenes from the essential oil of plants. Lignocellulosic biomass is very rigid in structure and must undergo pre-treatment before fermentation or thermochemical processing. Depending on the biomass source, physical grinding or milling may be required, followed by chemical, physicochemical or biological treatment. The chapter presents solvents at different stages of commercialization. For those at the early stages of development, some applications to suit their physical and solubility properties are suggested, and those which are more established, such as 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF), ethyl lactate and D-limonene, are discussed in more detail. 2-MeTHF from the furfural platform is an excellent bio-based solvent due to its wide range of solvation and physical properties.
