Abstract

In February 2007 UNICEF published a league table of child well-being in OECD countries. The UK was bottom of the league table, just below the USA. There was uproar in the British media and the question on everyone's lips was Why? Why were we doing so badly, so much worse than less rich countries, so consistently badly across the domains?
