Co-producing Nature-Based Interventions (NBIs) to support mental health outcomes in working age adults at Foss Park Hospital

Research output: Contribution to conferencePoster

Abstract

Despite strong evidence on the role of nature in supporting positive mental health outcomes, and evidence that occupational therapists are well placed to understand and implement its benefits, the use of nature-based interventions (NBIs) by mental health occupational therapists is less well documented. Occupational therapists are ideally placed to support the delivery of NBIs through the use of theoretical conceptual practice models/frameworks which ensure interventions are tailored to the individual, their needs, and levels of functioning.
The present project aims to explore the potential for NBIs to be delivered as a treatment intervention for working age adults at Foss Park Hospital. Through participatory action research (PAR) in collaboration with the occupational therapy team at Foss Park hospital, people with lived experience of severe mental illness, and nature-based providers in York we aim to co-produce recommendations to support the design and delivery of NBIs within Foss Park hospital, the adjacent York St John University allotment, and the wider York community to support positive health outcomes for people with severe mental illness. The poster presentation will provide an overview of the PAR process and co-production methodology.
