Coming out in the twenty-first century

Research output: Other contribution

Abstract

This entry explores coming out in the twenty-first century. It addresses some key approaches, including conceptualizations of coming out as a stage in the formation of the self, a significant life event associated with personal transformation and entry into a community, and, following Orne, a strategic, ongoing process of identity management. The entry indicates some potentially significant social changes of the twenty-first century that have reshaped the meaning and process of coming out, such as the normalization of some, if not all, LGBT identities, and highlights the continued need to think of identity management and disclosure as central to the experience of holding an LGBT identity.
