Abstract
We theoretically study the far-field pattern of vertical-cavity semiconductor laser (VCSEL) arrays and vertical cavity amplifier/modulator arrays. A comparison is made between the laser and amplifier array for the purpose of nonmechanical optical beam steering. The amplifier/modulator array shows superior potential over the laser arrays. The realisation of practical devices depends on the fabrication technology. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
