Cultural commissioning in interdisciplinary arts: practices and challenges

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

Abstract

This paper examines the possibilities and limitations of cultural commissioning practices within the institutional framework of the interdisciplinary arts organisation. In doing so, it will outline practical insights into the production and management of these types of complex cultural projects. Drawing on interviews with artistic directors, curators and producers from key UK-based visual arts organisations that have an explicit interdisciplinary approach, the paper examines the range of interdisciplinary cultural production methodologies currently in use. The paper will explore the growing emphasis on locale within interdisciplinary art commissioning, examining how organisations are increasingly concerned with addressing questions of mobility, ecology and place in relation to ideas of community. It investigates how knowledge is negotiated, exchanged, and sometimes contested between artists, communities, and institutional partners, highlighting the challenges and opportunities inherent in these collaborative processes. This paper contributes to the growing body of research on innovation in interdisciplinary arts production practices, concluding with practical insights for arts organisations seeking to develop effective commissioning strategies that support innovative work.
