Abstract
In a major and expensively produced five-part series that traces centuries of war between Islam and Christianity, the final episode considers the paradox that for the last half century the 'enemy' for Islamists has been within. The West has been a sideshow - a location and a target for fund-raising, attention-grabbing 'spectaculars'. The victims have been predominantly other Muslims, because at the heart of the most visible of Islamist struggles is not the West, nor the fate of the Palestinians, but Mecca itself.
