Abstract
OBJECTIVE:
Do an integrative review aimed to emphasize the main findings of neural development during adolescence.
METHODS:
Three neural aspects were emphasized due to their importance in human behavior cortical regions, subcortical regions and neurofunctional aspects, the latter focused on dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmission systems.
RESULTS:
Recent data pointed out that there are significant modifications in the structure of specific cortical and subcortical areas, especially those related to the mesolimbic system during adolescence. The clinical implications of these findings on adolescent behavior are also discussed.
CONCLUSION:
The period of adolescence shows critical transformations on the neural development through neurochemical and morphological aspects(AU)
