Abstract

Diffraction effects from a monolayer of monodispersed 10 μm diameter polystyrene spheres suspended in a thin film of 30 kA m-1 hydrocarbon-based magnetic fluid have been observed. The diffraction pattern with the magnetic field parallel to the film has been used to determine the sphere size and to evaluate the structure of the composite. Chain formation of the polystyrene spheres and the dispersed Fe3O4 particles in the carrier fluid is evident from the diffraction pattern.
