Abstract
The need for research on participation in sport by children and young people with disabilities is not only driven by growing awareness of the lack of research knowledge, but also by
political and policy pressure to ensure that exercise opportunities are open to all. This is most clearly expressed in the policy paper, A sporting future for all, in which the Government recognises that physical education and sport are a fundamental part of the education of all young people. Sport is identified as having a unique contribution to tackling social exclusion, while providing wider benefits in relation to health.
