Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore the constructs for assessing disaster mitigation performance in the context of operations and supply chains affected by natural disasters, such as flooding. Thirty semi-structured interviews (with senior managers including operations and supply chain managers) were carried out at organisations in Thailand and UK, they were coded in NVivo in order to ascertain some of the constructs related to disaster mitigation performance. Preliminary analysis of the results show that there are two types of performance management: process-based performance and outcome-based performance. Organisations who are prone to disasters such as flooding could assess both the performance of their processes and outcomes with the aim to improve them in the long-run. Although outcome based performance has been the focus of many performance management programmes, this paper includes process-based and outcome-based performance.
