Abstract
Design data models don’t receive as much attention as modeling languages (has anyone heard about data model wars?). However, with such a variety of languages for system designn available nowadays, the modeling constructs implemented by such languages are increasingly important. This paper addresses the need of a data model supporting the modeling constructs for
interface-based design. This methodology is particularly interesting because it involves elements of functional and structural design. We address such issue in a novel design data model which can be used as a back-end for both functional and structural design specification. As we can expect a high degree of collaboration among designers in system-level design, we also derive a set of rules to enforce consistency between the functional and structural submodels.
An implementation of the proposed data model is presented, with particular emphasis to its insertion in a distributed, multi-user design environment.
