Abstract
The paper examines the appropriateness of using the widely used technique of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to assess the effectiveness of individual university Departments of Economics in producing high quality research and teaching when these are subject to a grading process. The paper compares the properties and assumptions of DEA with those of the Free Disposal Hull (FDH) model and compares the empirical implications of the two frontier analysis methods for the above assessment. The paper has now been published and is available online (Ref: dx.doi.org/10.1080/10036846.2014.9393730).
