Abstract

We present a first order formulation of d = 11 supergravity in terms of an elementary connection field ωμ ij, the vielbein eμ i and gravitino ψμ α. The lagrangian has a gauge invariance which mixes the base indices μ and tangent indices i, j of the spin connection ωμ ij. The antisymmetric tensor Aμvλ is shown to emerge as part of ωμ ij in the solution of its equation of motion, and to have the geometric meaning of torsion.
