First order formulation and geometrical interpretation of D = 11 supergravity

Abstract

We present a first order formulation of d = 11 supergravity in terms of an elementary connection field ω_μ ^ij, the vielbein e_μ ⁱ and gravitino ψ_μ ^α. The lagrangian has a gauge invariance which mixes the base indices μ and tangent indices i, j of the spin connection ω_μ ^ij. The antisymmetric tensor A_μvλ is shown to emerge as part of ω_μ ^ij in the solution of its equation of motion, and to have the geometric meaning of torsion.
