Abstract
The Flamingo Land Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) has been developed by CIRCLE (Centre for the Integration of Research, Conservation and Learning), a joint collaboration between Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo and the University of York’s Environment Department. Advice was given by representatives from the Ryedale BAP, local naturalists and staff at Flamingo Land.
The Biodiversity Action Plan aims to reduce any negative impacts that Flamingo Land may cause on wildlife in the area, and ensures that the current biodiversity can be maintained and encouraged for future generations to enjoy. The BAP identifies the current levels of wildlife in and around the park and identifies key species and habitats that have particular significance. It suggests targets and actions to take place over the next five years, from October 2011, until September 2016, following which the BAP will be revised and the work will be evaluated.
The plan covers the entirety of the Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo, including set aside land and holiday village to the north (see map, page 8), in total 375 acres. It has been written to work alongside the Ryedale BAP, which covers the area of Ryedale outside of the North York Moors National Park, including sections of the Howardian Hills and the Yorkshire Wolds. Both BAPs were a response to the United Kingdom Biodiversity Action Plan (www.ukbap.org.uk), which in turn was produced following the production of the Convention of Biological Diversity at the summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.
