Abstract
This article questions the use of the concept of feud for early modern historians. The concept, as currently understood, is confused. The article argues that we shall have to look for better conceptual and theoretical tools if we are to draw attention to the signifi cance of the feud for understanding early modernity. It proposes that we adopt the concept of enmity in its place.
