GURDWARAS, GUNS AND GRUDGES IN 'POST-RACIAL' AMERICA

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

This paper examines the tragic Gurdwara shootings in Wisconsin in the context of 'post-racial' America. The argument that Western societies have seen an 'end of racism' is the central idea behind the post-racial America, this paper thus explores the way in which such a discourse has been mobilized in this case to silence the critique of America's embedded structural racism. Popular accounts of the shootings within the mainstream media focused explanations primarily upon mistaken identity, gun policy or as the act of a particular individual, these accounts I argue are problematic as they tend to dismiss and deflect attention away from the very real problem of racism which can no longer be denied.
