Health, Social Care and Homelessness

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter explores the interrelationships between homelessness, social care and health systems at European level and across the OECD. The chapter starts by examining distorting tendencies in how health and social care systems have tended to respond to homelessness and the newer, more evidence-based responses that have sought to improve strategy, planning and practice. The chapter also looks at the logistical challenges in delivering health and social care to people experiencing homelessness and the importance of system integration. The emergent evidence on the gender dynamics of homelessness and what this means for health and social care systems is discussed as a way of exploring how widening definitions of homelessness are influencing the design for medical and social care services.
