Abstract

Originally commissioned by Rednile Projects, as part of their Factory Nights Programme, Hord Songs is a vocal and electronic soundscape by Stef Conner, based on Old English riddles about weaponry, gold, conflict and exile. Inspired by the Staffordshire Hoard and premiered at the Hoard exhibit at the potteries Museum, Stoke-on-Trent (2013), the music weaves an atmospheric web of clearly articulated phrases, barely discernible words and amorphous clouds of language fragments, obscured by their similarity with atmospheric sounds. Texts are heard in both Old and Modern English. The compositions were premiered along with projections of photographs by the artist Helen Stead, which also appear in the album artwork.
