In pursuit of evidences for local production of Bohai tricoloured earthenware: chemical analyses of lead glaze ceramics excavated from Kraskino and Gorbatka in the Russian Maritime Province

This paper aims at revealing the distribution channels of raw material and distinguishing lead glaze ceramics that were manufactured in Bohai from other areas. The potsherds excavated from the Kraskino and Gorbatka sites in the Russian Maritime Province were analyzed for this purpose, considering the firing temperature, chemical composition of clay and lead isotope ratio of glaze. The lead isotope ratio of the shards showed values of several mine areas, including northern China and southern China area, and showed that the raw materials were brought from wider area, including Japan area. However, in order to consider the background of the latter, it is necessary to accumulate the examples of production-related artefacts such as crucibles and metal sediments from the Bohai region. It was also clear that even in the copper used as colouring of green glaze, there were at least two types depending on the presence of zinc. Since the green colouring that includes zinc can be confirmed in the Chinese Tang tricoloured earthenware and Japanese lead glaze ceramics, it can be said that it was circulated around East Asia at least from the seventh to tenth century and has been used as colouring of green glaze. In addition, excavated Tang tricoloured earthenware analyzed by the same method was compared to this data. As a result, Bohai (Kraskino and Gorbatka) region lead glaze earthenware was found out to be different from Tang tricoloured in both the production technique and the raw materials.
