Abstract

This book constitutes the refereed post-conference proceedings of the 4th EAI International Conference on Innovations and Interdisciplinary Solutions for Underserved Areas, InterSol 2020, held in Nairobi, Kenya, in March 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the conference is postponed to a later date in 2020.
The 20 papers presented were selected from 50 submissions and issue different problems in underserved and unserved areas. They face problems in almost all sectors such as energy, water, communication, climate, food, education, transportation, social development, and economic growth.

This conference brought together African researchers from across 18 countries to focus on interdisci- plinary and transdisciplinary solutions to the complex social-ecological challenges we face. A variety of key themes of InterSol2020 conference ranged from climate change adaptation and disaster risk preparedness; corporate environmental and social gover- nance; land use change; nature-based solutions to infrastructure climate proofing; challenges and barriers faced by women in research; mitigating environmental pollu- tion; information communication technology for overcoming the digital divide and improving health; e-readiness of marginalized communities; linking scientific and indigenous knowledge, and how is this evidence base translated into decision-making processes that result in flourishing biodiversity, and prosperous, meaningful liveli- hoods, amongst other topics. Accordingly, the overarching theme for this year's edition was “Nature-based solutions, gender equity and interconnectivity for climate resilience in Africa”, with the first day celebrating International Women’s Day, and the second investigating “Envisioning sustainable social-ecological futures.” Drawing from case studies in Africa and Asia, the chapters in this book represent a subset of five of these key themes: (1) Feeding and securing healthy futures; (2) Mitigating environmental pollution and conservation beyond protected areas; (3) Climate change and energy efficiency; (4) ICT and innovative connectivity as an enabler for sustainable devel- opment; and (5) Computer science and its applications
