Introduction: Professions and professional service firms

This co-edited book aims to fill a significant gap on professions and professional service firms in the enterprise context in the literature. There are many texts on enterprises in the private and public sector, as defined in terms of business organisation from the book by Carter and Jones-Evans (2006) on Enterprise and Small Businesses to that of Lam (2014) on Enterprise Risk Management. The relationship between professions and professional service firms and enterprise in the global economy, which is often seen to be in tension, is also frequently discussed in standard business studies books, albeit typically only in a few paragraphs. This is illustrated by the edited collection by Linstead, Fulop and Liley (2009) on Management and Organization and the text by Thompson and McHugh (2009) entitled Work Organisations. A key rationale for the edited collection presented here is that these areas have not been systematically brought together and addressed, except in articles in outlets such as the Journal of Professions and Organization (see, for example, Na Fu, Flood and Morris 2016; Pickering 2017) and dedicated profession-specific journals such as Accounting, Organizations and Society (see, for instance, Kurunmaki 2004; Lander, Koene and Linsson 2013). To be sure, such areas are also occasionally discussed in segmented book chapters, like the sole-authored text by Freidson (2001) on Professionalism: The Third Logic and the edited compilation by Dent, Bourgeault, Denis and Kuhlmann (2016) entitled The Routledge Companion to the Professions and Professionalism but crucially they remain relatively at the periphery in terms of focus.
