Introduction to the Handbook on Society and Social Policy

Abstract

This introduction to the Handbook on Society and Social Policy focuses on a number of overarching issues that set the broad frame for the individual contributions that follow. Particular emphasis is placed upon those phenomena – some perennial, some not – that are of consequence to the ways in which social policies are understood and formulated in different parts of the world. ‘Globalization’, as ever, requires attention but largely as a backdrop to other more immediate factors – neoliberal ‘austerity’, human migration, populism – that have become of special concern. These matters, together with a brief discussion of possible solutions in the form of social investment strategies, are considered before the discussion moves on to an exploration of North-South issues and specifically the changing role of social policies in the developing world. Finally, the growing significance of the climate emergency is examined, with particular attention to its dramatic implications both for society and social policy.
