Abstract

Landscape-level approaches to risk assessment are designed to address simplifying assumptions in lower-tier calculations through the inclusion of local and regional factors. Here, two probabilistic approaches are compared for incorporating landscape factors into assessments of aquatic exposure arising from spray drift. The first method relies on interrogation of satellite imagery and aerial photography to assess the proximity of treated crop and surface water bodies across an area of interest. The second approach involves division of a region into characteristic landscape types. Measurements made. on the ground are then used to define distributions for parameters used in basic exposure assessment. Strengths and weaknesses of the two approaches are identified and ideas are proposed for future development in landscape approaches to risk assessment.
