Abstract
Older lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgenders (LGBTs) share many of the concerns of younger LGBT, exacerbated by aging. They also share many of the concerns of older heterosexual people, magnified through the lens of gender and sexuality. The accumulative effects of discrimination and marginalization can have an impact on well-being among many LGBT in older age, although for some strong social support networks can act as buffers and promote resilience. They are also echoed in health and social care provision for older people, which is often heteronormative at best and prejudiced at worst. Many older LGBT face being unwillingly 'outed' through care needs and/or having to go back into the closet to avoid discrimination. There is a need to address ageism in the LGBT community and sexuality and gender discrimination among age-related services.
