Abstract

The edition by Peter Seymour of 110' music (348 pages) follows in the tradition of London performances in the latter decades of the eighteenth century with extracts chosen and performed for the occasion by several composers, in this case from the original (1733) Caldara collaboration and from the subsequent hugely popular settings by Vivaldi (1734), Pergolesi (1735), and Jommelli (1761). Apart from preparing the performing edition based on a fair copy produced for the Imperial library in Vienna (Caldara), a manuscript copy in B.N. Univeristaria, Torino (Vivaldi), an early copy now in Brussels, Bibliotèque du Conservatoire royal de musique (Pergolesi) and a projected complete edition (1783) in Stuttgart (Jommelli).
The semi-staged performance on 13 July, 2012 was the closing evening concert in York Early Music Festival. Performance practice issues included pitch, instrumentation (in particular Jommelli’s use of the corno ‘col basso’), voice types, tempo and ornamentation. Staging was jointly directed by Thomas Guthrie and Peter Seymour.
