Managing mental health and employment

Abstract

It has been estimated that up to one in four people will experience a mental health problem at some time in their adult life. Often, this leads to the loss of employment - benefit claims due to mental ill health (predominantly anxiety and depression) currently make up the biggest proportion of the Incapacity Benefit caseload. Aside from the cost to the Exchequer in the form of benefit payments, recent research suggests that absenteeism, presenteeism (people at work but not working to their full capacity) and staff turnover due to mental ill health costs UK employers almost 26 billion pounds every year. However, many people do succeed in retaining employment throughout periods of mental ill health. Understanding their experiences is important for improving policies and support strategies around mental health and employment.
