The structural characteristics of nod factors which mediate alfalfa and soyabean nodulation were analyzed using mass spectrometry. The mutant strains of O42B were constructed to observe nodulation behavior of soyabean and alfalfa by Rhizobium strain O42B. The structural information on nod factors produced by the derivatives was obtained by ES-CID tandem mass spectrometry. The O42BnoeL- mutant strain produced nod factor structures which lacked fucosyl moiety on reducing terminal GlcNAc residue.
