Abstract
Phosphates of metals such as Pb, Zn and Ni have extremely low solubilities and are stable under the range of Eh and pH conditions encountered in the natural environment. It has been suggested that formation of metal phosphates could effectively "lock up" metals in situ in contaminated sites so that they would no longer pose a pollution problem. We report a leaching column investigation into the use of bone meal as a phosphorus source for the formation of metal phosphates in metal contaminated soil. Bone meal amendments reduced the concentration of metals released into leachate and increased pH. Fine grained bone meal treatments reduced metal concentrations in leachates more than coarser bone meal. Amendments of unincinerated bone meal reduced metal concentrations in leachates more than incinerated bone meal. Concentrations of metals in leachate decreased with increasing irrigation rate but total amount of metals removed from the soils increased.
