Abstract
Sycorax is an absence The Tempest - referred to by other characters but dead before the action of the play begins. But she is potently present in the imaginative fabric of the play and in the minds of its characters. And Prospero arguably thinks about himself as 'Not Sycorax' as much as he self-configures in positive terms. How has the potent absence and telling presence of Sycorax been treated in performance?
