Abstract

E3 matrix elements have been determined for transitions between states up to I(pi)=13- in Nd-148, providing direct evidence for strong octupole collectivity in a rotational band. These values, as well as the corresponding E1 and E2 matrix elements, were obtained from Coulomb excitation data using Ni-58 and Mo-92 ions, projectile excitation using a Pb-208 target, and from recoil distance lifetime measurements. The results are consistent with collective model predictions for Nd-148 assuming intrinsic quadrupole and octupole moments of Q20 almost-equal-to 400 e fm2 and Q30 almost-equal-to 1500 efm3. The E3 strength coupling the negative-parity states to the beta band is found to be appreciable.
