Abstract
This paper draws on Lefebvre’s notion of ‘Rhythmanalysis' (1992) as a non-representational way of exploring the enactment of spaces and times in two contexts; the first in the context of consultancy practice and the second in the context of an urban music scene.
Hitherto, in the case of consultancy practice materiality and space have been taken for granted in terms of props that help consultants organise their presentations to clients and stages where consultancy performances happen. We argue that materiality and space should not be regarded simply as context but as constitutive of consultancy performances.
In the case of the urban music scene, the materiality is represented by a set of physical constraints that appear to limit performance outcomes which are rather, however, the product of improvised performances based on skill criteria where outcomes are imprecise and unpredictable, and often counter-intuitive.
The paper demonstrates the ways in which organisational space is choreographed into being over time and how this event unfolds in a multiplicity of rhythms - polyrythmia - that produce multiple time-spaces.
